Gandaki, Jan 9 : Khagaraj Adhikari of the CPN (UML) has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Gandaki Province. He is the third Chief Minister of the Province. Province Chief Prithvi Man Gurung, in accordance with Article 166 (2) of the Constitution, appointed Adhikari to the post.
He was elected to the Province Assembly from Kaski 1 (1) in the election to the House of Representatives and Province Assembly held on November 20.
Born to father Shesh Raman Upadhyay and mother Leela Devi on March 26, 1962 at Begnas of Kaski, Adhikari had assumed the responsibility of President of Free Student Union at Ananda Jyoti Secondary School at the age of 11.
He became Kaski District Chairperson of All Nepal National Independent Students Union (ANNISU) in 2036 BS and FSU member at PN Campus in 2037 BS.
Similarly, Adhikari became ANNISU central committee member in 2038 BS as well as vice- chairperson after two years.
He was elected FSU President of PN Campus in 2040 BS as well as in 2041 BS. Adhikari, who spent time in jails of different districts from 2042-2047 BS, became founder central member of Democratic National Youth Association Nepal.
He was elected as the member of House of Representatives from Kaski-1 in mid-term election held in 2051 BS and got the responsibility of whip of the party in 2054 BS.
The newly appointed Chief Minister Adhikari had played a leading role in democratic movement held in 2062/63 and had taken the charge of Minister for Health and Population after the establishment of republic.
Elected as central member from party’s eighth national convention held in 2065 BS, Adhikari got the responsibility of Gandaki in-charge, member of the organisation department and politburo member.
He won the election to HoR from Kaski-1 in the general election held in 2074 BS as well as appointed as the Home Minister on June 10, 2021.
He is now standing committee member and chief of the organisation department. Adhikari has been elected as Chief Minister of Gandaki Province after winning the election of Province Assembly from Kaski 1(1).
