Galkot, March 13 : Last September, Bom Bahadur Pun, a local resident of Kothekhole Rural Municipality-4 in Baglung district suffered failure of both his kidneys, leading him to state of hopelessness.
At present, Pun is brimming with life as he recently got his kidney transplanted. What’s notable about his kidney transplant is he got his mother’s kidney matched and then transplanted successfully, a life-saving experience that still moves the 25-year-old to tears recalling how he got a second birth from his mother.
Seemingly overwhelmed when this scribe met him in Pokhara recently Pun exclaimed, “Twenty-five years ago my mother brought me to life, 25 years later, she gave me a second life.” Pun is currently in Pokhara with his mother Kamala Pun and availing medical treatment from the Gandaki Hospital’s doctors’ direct supervision. Benevolent mother Pun was grateful towards the good samaritans’ support in saving her son from the jaw of death.
According to her, they received around Rs 2 million financial assistance from relatives and well-wishers at home and abroad which, she admitted, was an amount beyond their capacity to bear the expenses of the kidney transplantation.
“The cash support was a vital aid in saving my son’s life.” “How could I see the one I brought to life dying? I donated my kidney but the transplantation was possible due to the financial support from good samaritans,” expressed the grateful mother. He recollected that she had stepped in as a savior and easily agreed to donate one of her two kidneys.
Both of them saw the rays of hope when the kidney matched during the medical examination and that could be transplanted. Now the only obstacle the mother-son duo had to surpass was economic constraint. That’s again when some well-wishers and kidney patient’s relatives stepped in to save his life.
“Initially, we discussed the matter within the family and close kin,” recalled Bom, adding that doctors okaying for the transplant had kindled hope in them. Bom’s relative Giri Bahadur Pun had coordinated a fundraising drive where locals and Nepalis abroad and various Nepalis organizations abroad such as the UK Society Tangram and Tarakhola Rural Municipality Society Qatar among others generously supported in cash for the kidney transplant.
So far, Rs 1,929,000 has been received from supporters for Bom’s treatment and the amount has been handed over to the patient, informed Giri Bahadur.
According to Giri Bahadur, a large chunk of the fund raised has been spent for Bom’s treatment. “It costs Rs 60,000 monthly to buy medicine for the patient,” informed Giri Bahadur, extending his thankfulness to all those supporting this cause.
