IPL 2020: Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah star as table-toppers MI thrash RCB to inch closer to play-offs

New Delhi, October 28 : Mumbai Indians have all but sealed a place in the play-offs of IPL 2020 after becoming the first team to get to 16 points as the race for the top 4 spot looks spicier than ever in the UAE. A classy 79 not out from Suryakumar Yadav and a Jasprit Bumrah special with the ball helped the defending champions outclass Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday at the Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

With the defeat, Virat Kohli’s RCB stay at the 2nd spot with 14 points but their hopes of finishing in the top 2 have taken a hit. RCB are not yet assured of a spot in the play-offs but one more win in their next 2 outings should see them go through to the knockout stages.

Days after he found his name missing from the India squads for the Australia tour, Suryakumar Yadav, who has been a consistent performer across all formats at the domestic level and in the IPL, made a statement with a knock that demoralised the RCB bowlers and the dug-out. Head coach Simon Katich and captain Virat Kohli watched on with helplessness reflecting on their face as Suryakumar effortlessly kept hitting the pacers and spinners into the stands.

Suryakumar Yadav hit 79 from just 43 balls as the No. 3 batsman hit 3 sixes and 10 boundaries in an awe-inspiring display of clean-hitting. Mumbai Indians gunned down a 165-run target with 5 balls to spare. He never let the asking rate climb up as he kept finding the boundaries with ease. Suryakumar showed his class by taking on RCB’s strike bowler Yuzvendra Chahal in the middle overs. He swept, hit inside-out cover drives and what not to take MI past the finish line.

After hitting the winning runs, Suryakumar Yadav got his helmet off and came up with a swag-rich celebration, signalling to the dug-out that he was always going to get the job done.

Mumbai did not have a fluent chase as lost Quinton de Kock after a fine start. Ishan Kishan threw away a start while trying to take on Yuzvendra Chahal and Saurabh Tiwary was sent back early after Devdutt Padikkal took a stunning catch to add to his effortless display of batting earlier in the day.

Mumbai Indians were in a spot of bother a 72 for 3 but Surykumar Yadav made sure he remained till the end and got his team past the finish line. He got good support from Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya towards the end as MI completed another successful chase.

Devdutt Padikkal wages lone battle as big guns disappoint

Royal Challengers Bangalore brought in Josh Philippe in place of Aaron Finch and the young opener combined with Devdutt Padikkal to give the team a good start. However, after Philippe got out after the powerplay, there was no real contribution to Padikkal in the middle overs.

Virat Kohli struggled to put bat to ball before becoming Jasprit Bumrah’s 100th IPL victim. He made just 9 from 14 balls, putting pressure on the rest of the order.

AB de Villiers got going but a full-toss from Kieron Pollard got the RCB star out. Padikkal departed for 74 after which RCB struggled to close it off. Just 35 runs came from the last 5 overs during which they lost 4 wickets.

It was Jasprit Bumrah who plotted Mumbai Indians’ downfall with a top spell, that included a double-wicket maiden. Bumrah finished with 3/14 in his 4-over spell as the defending champions pulled things back wonderfully well. (India Today)
