Delhi breaks record as daily Covid-19 tally crosses 5,000-mark for the first time

New Delhi, October 28 : The number of new Covid-19 cases in the national capital continues to rise and on Wednesday, for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic broke, Delhi reported more than 5,600 Covid-19 cases in a day. Authorities say the infection rate in the national capital has crossed 9 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 5,673 new cases of Covid-19 and 40 deaths were reported in Delhi, taking the total number of cases reported so far to 3,70,014 and the death toll to 6,396.

The national capital is witnessing a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases since the last few days.

The previous highest single-day spike of 4,853 cases was recorded on Tuesday. The number of fresh cases recorded on Monday stood at 2,832, and 4,136 on Sunday, while the figures were 4,116 on Saturday and 4,086 on Friday.

The 5,673 fresh cases on Wednesday came out of the 60,571 tests conducted the previous day. The active cases tally on Wednesday rose to 29,378 from 27,873 the previous day.

While the number of new cases continues to rise in Delhi, the number of containment zones has also gone up to 3,047, with the maximum 558 in southwest Delhi and the lowest 82 in northeast Delhi.

As on Tuesday, there were 3,047 Covid-19 containment zones. So far, 6,657 containment zones have been created and of these, 3,610 have been de-contained by authorities since the coronavirus outbreak.

According to data prepared by the Revenue Department, Delhi’s seven districts have more than 200 containment zones – southwest (558), south (505), west (333), New Delhi (275), central (267), southeast (247) and northwest (246). Northeast Delhi has 82 such zones, which is the lowest in the national capital, followed by east (165), north (171) and Shahdara (198). (India Today)
