BJP leader, former chief minister of India’s Maharashtra tests positive for COVID-19

Mumbai, October 23 : A senior leader from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former chief minister of the western state of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

Fadnavis took to social media platform to announce he has contracted the infection. The former chief minister urged his close contacts to get tested for the coronavirus. Fadnavis is BJP’s senior leader in charge of the election campaign in northeastern Bihar state.

Local elections are scheduled to be held in Bihar in three phases from Oct. 28. Votes will be counted on Nov. 10. Presently the election campaigning is going on in the state.

India is in the grip of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. India’s health ministry said Saturday that the number of COVID-19 cases in India reached 7,814,682 and death toll rose to 117,956.
